Surfers prepare for event

Surfers are getting ready for the Lizzard Hurricane Surf Pro 2014 this December.

SURFERS are getting ready to show off their talent on 13 and 14 December at Umhlanga Main Beach in the Lizzard Hurricane Surf Pro 2014, which kicks off the annual Umhlanga Summer Festival.

Surfers of all ages are encouraged to enter from young Novice beginners to Masters. There will be both short board and long board divisions and the event will end in a retro-style 70s tag team competition where a maximum of five teams will compete on very old surfboards for a cash prize of R1250.

Umhlanga’s Wave Wizards Surf Club will be hosting the event in conjunction with KZN Central Surfing. There are some great prizes on offer including R10 000 cash from Lizzard, R5000 cash from Hurricane Surf, R5000 from Just Juice, R2000 from Bells and R1000 cash from Zigzag Surf Mag.

Patrick Frickel from Oceanriders Academy will be down at the beach offering free sports massages to all the surfers. Surfers will also get sun cream from Zinka SA.

Marketing Manager of Lizzard, Gavin Roberts, said: “Many surfers say that this is their favourite event on the South African calendar. It is just fantastic to see so many people of all ages taking part and see the community come together to enjoy the ocean. We are expecting record entries from all over South Africa.”

The prize-giving for the event will take place on Monday evening 15 December at the Umhlanga Bowling Club. There will be a ‘Throwing it Back 30 Years’ party that night and all surfers, locals and holiday makers are invited to go along and enjoy the tunes by DJ and local entertainer Harry Monks. Wave Wizards will recognise pioneer club members and celebrate 30 years of success in breeding great surfers for the international arena.

Entries close on Monday 8 December. For more information go to www.umhlangafestivals.co.za or contact Jestyn Viljoen on 079 500 3945 or contact Julie de Vries on julie@expandingbranding.co.za for an entry form.
