Van Gelder wins TriRock

Donovan van Gelder took the top position on the podium at the weekend's TriRock Durban event.

TRIATHLETE Donovan van Gelder from KZN swam, cycled and ran his way to the win the TriRock Durban series at the weekend.

Van Gelder also stamped his authority on the event in the cycle leg, his strongest discipline. This resulted in him coming into the second transition area with a four-minute lead over chasing triathlete Michael Cannon. Van Gelder never seemed under too much pressure during the run as Cannon closed the gap but was unable to bridge the deficit. Gareth Harrington combined his three disciplines into one excellent performance to claim the final spot on the podium.

Women's winner was Kirsten Schut who raced TriRock Durban 2013, and was determined to come back stronger in 2014. Course knowledge and pacing are key components to success in longer distance racing and Schut put all of these together on race day to secure a memorable victory.

The countries top athletes and celebrities were in attendance to be part of this celebration of athletic success including the 2014 Comrades Marathon winner, Bongmusa Mthembu, who ran the final leg of relay team with double Olympian Kate Roberts, who did the swim leg of the team.
