Primary schools’ cricket festival

The annual Kingsmead Mynahs three-day tournament will be at Kearsney and Highbury.

THE annual Kingsmead Mynahs three-day tournament, showcasing U11 cricketing talent in the province, will be played at Kearsney College and Highbury this week.

Sixteen teams are scheduled to take part in the Waltons 20/20 U11 cricket tournament, with 14 top primary school teams and two development sides, sponsored by the KZN Cricket Union, competing this year, from Friday 3 October to Sunday 5 October.

Local participating schools are DPHS Dragons, Glenwood Hoppers, Clifton Chargers, along with others from the province, the Hillcrest Hotshots, Winston Park Pythons, Highbury Hurricanes, HCA Pinch Hitters, Kloof Cobras, Westville Warriors, Northlanders, Chelsea Lions, Pelham Panthers, St Charles Strikers and Umhlali Dolphins.

In addition to the school teams, there will be two development sides sponsored by the KZN Cricket Union, the Umgeni Mambas and Durban Central Tigers.

Teams will play in pools of eight and play seven games in the three days – so non-stop cricket is promised for the weekend. Full catering facilities will be available at the Kearsney coffee shop.

The tournament was the idea of retired Kearsney cricket coach Phil Ratcliffe and is run by himself and Mike Griffiths. They organise what has proved to be an exciting and fun-filled three days of non-stop cricket, with some of the province’s top U11 cricketers displaying their talent.
