Girls’ College win hockey tourney

Durban Girls' College hockey players took the top spot at the SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournament.

DEFENDING champions, Durban Girls’ College retained their title in the SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournament at Thomas More College and St Mary’s DSG at the weekend.

College took on St Anne’s in the gold medal game concluding two days of exceptional hockey. Less than a minute into the game, College’s Teagan McFall stormed towards St Anne’s goal slotting in a superb reverse stick shot into the top left hand corner.

For the next 29 minutes the game had plenty of action but the scoreboard remained unchanged. Both teams surged towards their opponent’s goals but were unable to find the back of the net with brilliant defending from both teams.

“This is my fourth year playing for College’s first team, and my fourth and final SPAR tournament. So being my last tournament I am happy that we managed to defend our title and keep the trophy! After our terrific season, we continued our form and had a great tournament overall,” said a delighted captain for Durban Girls’ College, Michelle Alborough.

Bell Meek, coach for Durban Girls’ College said: “I am really thrilled with the team’s performance, they played extremely well throughout the tournament right up until the end. It was a good final against a tough opponent.”

Rob Philipson from SPAR KZN said: “Congratulations to all of the teams that came out this weekend, you are all winners! The action was fantastic with 29 exciting games being played and 87 goals being scored. I am in awe of the talent that was on the pitch this weekend, some great players coming through our school ranks. SPAR KZN is delighted to give them the opportunity to show off their skills against teams they don’t ordinarily get to play!”

Les Galloway, Tournament Director said: “What a conclusion to the regional tournament. We had exciting matches with many goals being scored. It was wonderful to see the players enjoying themselves playing hockey and then having loads of fun off the field. We look forward to next year’s tournament!”
