Road closures for the Big Walk

Motorists are urged to be aware of road closures for this Sunday's Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk.

THIS year’s Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk will be on Sunday 18 May.

For a second year running, more than 30 000 walkers will share a strip of Durban’s gorgeous beachfront together when they hit the beachfront for the walk.

While people from all over KZN (and beyond) have been signing up for the event, organisers have been working flat out with city officials to make sure everything’s in place for a smooth event, especially in terms of traffic for race pack collection and the event.

Several road closures will take effect on the day of the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk and motorists are urged to take note of these.

From 5am until around 12.30pm, Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue (south bound) from Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road to Sandile Thusi (Argyle) Road will be closed to traffic.

Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue (north bound) from Sandile Thusi (Argyle) Road to Isaiah Ntshangase (Walter Gilbert) Road will also be closed during this time.

From 6am until 12.30pm, road closures will be along Snell Parade from Athlone Drive to Battery Beach Road, Athlone Drive between Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue and Snell Parade, the M4 (north and south bound) offramp to Athlone Drive, M4 (south and north bound) onramp to Riverside Road (for 15km and 20 km walkers). The roadway will be open to traffic at 11.30am.

Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue (south bound) two lanes from Athlone Drive to Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road will be closed from 6am. All vehicles are to go west on Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road. Battery Beach Road / Snell Parade [at the traffic circle] will also be closed from 6am. There will be controlled access to the parking at the Mustering Fields.

Walkers can park at designated areas near the finish area of Moses Mabhida Stadium and catch a free shuttle bus to the start. Alternate parking is also available.
