Hillcrest Villagers ends season on a high

HVJR finished the season with some exciting, highly competitive games.

The DRSU Youth Rugby finals yielded a mixed bag for Hillcrest Villagers Junior Rugby Club on the weekend of 14 – 15 September where four of the club’s team contested the leagues finals at Crusaders Rugby Club.

The U13B took gold in the first match of the day by default when their opposition failed to arrive for the match. Their U13A team counterparts had a tougher time of it, coming up against a very strong Collegians outfit and had to settle for silver this season – going down 10-31 at the final whistle with Kyle Kilfoil scoring 2 tries for Hillcrest.

The U15B team came up against a Collegians outfit who have improved week on week during the season – this time the Kings Park based club managed a 5-36 drubbing and Hillcrest once again having to settle for the silver medals. Mention must be made of the gargantuan effort made by Alex Little who put his body on the line and played courageously in attack and defence – one knock too many finally ending his game where he scored the only try of the day.

The U16 match was always going to be a cracker – and so it proved. The Hillcrest boys came out firing in the first half – playing most of the rugby and looking likely to win the encounter. But the Varsity College Team had other ideas and came back strongly in the second half to make a game of it. The final score of 15-14 earned Hillcrest their second set of Gold medals of the day in a match that would have compared with any school U16A match in the province for excitement and entertainment value. Shaun Stoltz and Tristan Dixon crossed the whitewash for Hillcrest with Bryce Kitching adding the extras via a conversion and a penalty.
