Sastri College honours top matrics

Sastri College honoured their top matric students at a special assembly this morning.

SASTRI College in Durban celebrated success this week at a special assembly honouring its top matriculants.

The school invited the top ten learners, Jaleela Ismail, Jyoti Ramessur, Nazeera Peerbhay, Audrey Sibanda, Kwanele Masondo, Shivaan Singh, Zaineta Maharaj, Jameel Rajah, Martinique Spies and Sabrina Naidoo to the school to celebrate the excellent results produced by the Class of 2015.

Deputy principal at the school, Jyoti Singh said, Jaleela Ismail was not only the number one achiever in the school but also made the school proud with her fifth position in the district.

“The excellent results is a culmination of our school motto, which embodies good learner discipline and academic excellence as encapsulated by our princial Rajan Maharaj. The matrics of 2015 have laid a good foundation for our students this year. Accolades go to the staff and students for their effort in attaining such great achievement,” Singh said.

Jaleela Ismail said, when she heard that the Department of Education was looking for her, she hoped she didn't do anything wrong. “It was very overwhelming when they contacted to to tell me I was part of the Top Ten and they wanted me to be at the ICC function. I cried I was so happy. I wanted to do well and didn't realise just how well until the results were out,” she said.

The top student said it was through “hard work, a lot of effort support from family and friends and God's will, grace and mercy” that she was able to achieve her results. “Procrastination is the thief of time! There are a lot of matrics that wait for the last minute to work hard and end up with regrets. Start early, now is the best opportunity because with hard work anything is possible,” she advised. Ismail will be studying BComT with hopes of becoming a chartered accountant.

The top three students at the school received bursary awards from the Sastri College Alumni Fund and the Krishna Sommers Education Fund.
