The tail wagging the dog

The over-burdened taxpayer is footing the bill for payouts, says resident.

EDITOR – Finally SAA was able to secure the bailout of R3,5 billion. Some argue that its like throwing away good money after bad money but the country’s carrier is also the pride of the country and one has to accept that the ANC is just too afraid to upset the Unions and would not risk suggesting reducing the wage bill. Very much like Eskom – the ANC would continue to bailout Eskom for much the same reason.

In recent days the university students have been back in action refusing to pay for their share of the amount owing to the universities and once again the ANC-led government are too afraid to risk alienating the students and buckled in agreeing that students should be readmitted notwithstanding the outstanding debt.

The universities are referred to as autonomous bodies but in reality these institutions are really State Owned Enterprises because they rely on the state to exist. At one point in time the state contributed a big percentage in state subsidies and the students contributed the balance in fees but today the government is contributing the full amount in subsidies and in NSFAS loans – essentially making it a 100 per cent state funded enterprise.

The over-burdened tax payer foots the bill and it cannot get better. It’s what one calls a classic case of the “tail wagging the dog.”
