Business community anxious for political certainty

CEO of the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Palesa Phili, comments on the appointment of the new mayor and deputy mayor.

EDITOR – The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomes the opportunity to comment on the appointment of the new mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Mxolisi Kaunda, and the deputy mayor, Belinda Scott.

EThekwini is currently in a very challenging and uneasy period, with reduced projected growth, a constrained economy and rising unemployment. The business community has been anxious for political certainty as this directly impacts on the investment and economic profile of eThekwini and KwaZulu-Natal as well as local and international investor confidence.

The Durban Chamber is optimistic about our city’s future and the potential before us to grow and develop eThekwini into a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable economy as well as a city that is Africa’s most liveable and caring city by the year 2030. We believe that there needs to be more direct collaborative action between the public and private sectors.

The Durban Chamber has the issue of service delivery at the forefront of all of its engagements with the local and provincial government as it is the foundation of creating a conducive economic environment. In order to play its role as the engine of the economy, business as a whole needs reliable access to well-maintained and properly managed services and infrastructure supported by clear policies, resources and realistic target setting.

The Durban Chamber will continue to collaborate with the local and provincial government, to make recommendations as well as examine emerging policies around planning for eThekwini for the benefit of the local economy and the business community.
