Where are our nature-loving visionaries?

A Berea resident is disheartened by the state of the trees in the area.

EDITOR – This picture speaks of neglect and speaks for all the poor umzimbeet and other trees dying unnoticed and unloved on our once lovely streets!

We now have only the remnants of the Coastal Forest habitat, they gave shade and beauty in their season, cleaning and freshening stale city air. There was indeed something good about those nature-loving visionaries who planted them.

Where is the spirit of conservation now? We see it in the development on the Umhlanga ridge. Indigenous street trees are thriving there. Why not on the Berea? Here trees are hacked or chopped down, as if their existence threatens security. Yet greenery is a first-line defense against air pollution and climate change.

Yes, providing convenient housing for residents through ‘densification’ is important. But are the urban planners working in consultation with Parks and Gardens or is their focus only on bricks and mortar?

The concrete jungle grows apace. When last did Parks and Gardens plant a tree on the Berea?
