Spotlight on state of cemeteries

The state of cemeteries in Durban reveals a total disrespect for those who have passed on.

EDITOR – The article which appeared in the Berea Mail on Friday, 9 November refers.

During 2015, I was asked to forward pictures overseas of my grandparents’ graves which are situated in the Hime Road cemetery. I had the embarrassment of having to forward pictures which reflected the state of the cemetery and surrounds. We could not just enter through the arch at the entrance as a man was defecating in the entrance. We had to wait for him to finish and then had to step over the disgusting messl, to be greeted by the situation as reflected in my pictures.

My in-laws are buried in Stellawood and a visit to their graves revealed a similar state except that there, the cleaners and attendants wanted money from us to do their jobs and ensure the graves were kept clean and tidy.

My wife’s grandparents are buried in the West Street Cemetery and we have not been there for some years as it is just too dangerous.

What this scenario means is quite frankly, is a total disrespect for those who have passed on and excuses such as lack of staff or funds are quite frankly unacceptable.
