EDITOR – The Democratic Alliance has noted with concern the developments in the city’s finances. At a recent meeting of the eThekwini Executive Committee, a budget statement report indicated that government departments owed the municipality almost a billion rand. Despite this, those departments are not being disconnected as ordinary residents are.
The operator of Durban Transport, Tansnat, reportedly owes the city a staggering R354 million. Repeated requests by the DA for a progress report into what’s happening with Tansnat are ignored by the ANC. The ‘new’ court date for arbitration is only in March 2019. Meanwhile, buses regularly run out of diesel and leave commuters stranded.
The city’s days cash on hand have dropped from 84 days in July to 74 days in August. The report cites that people are battling to make ends meet and thus not paying their bills.
The DA are fighting for responsible fiscal management. The city should be striving to recoup outstanding debts (especially from other government departments), grow the rates base and make life affordable for city residents. Ordinary people shouldn’t have to suffer whilst government gets off scot free.
