To excel at school takes commitment

Zeph Ndlovu, president of the Durban Chamber, urges matriculants to keep determined to meet the needs of our economy.

EDITOR – To the matrics of 2015, to excel at school takes determination, commitment and a positive attitude, and you can feel justifiably proud!

The American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “The reward of a thing well done is to have done it” and hopefully this quote resonates with a number of you.

Some would argue that education; leadership, community service and character are the core of a fulfilled and fulfilling life. Each of these embody a positive attitude backed by purpose.

However, there are many who do not complete high school with an NSC certificate. As a community we must address the serious issue of poverty. As John Donne the famous poet said: ‘No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.’

How can a high-quality education be achieved by all students?

The Minister of Education says: ‘Our exams have to reflect daily life in the classroom and daily life in the classroom has to reflect life in society. The internet is indispensable, including the exam situation. Our priorities should be what we teach and how we teach. The simplicity of this approach could have a profound impact on providing a rich education for all students.’

As President of the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I congratulate you on your achievement as future leaders of business and civic society. We count on your determination and resolve to meet the needs of our economy. I also commend, applaud, and thank your parents, teachers, mentors, coaches and all who have supported you during your education, and the path that you have travelled thus far.

I wish you a bright future as you travel along the road and progress on your lifelong journey.

Zeph Ndlovu
