A sad state of affairs

A resident feels it is a sad state of affairs when the powers that be can make decisions without taking the sentiments of its citizens into consideration.

EDITOR – The first thought that crossed my mind when reading the article “No Campaign Can Stop Us” in last week's (14 August) Berea Mail was “where are the citizens democratic rights”.

I think it is a sad state of affairs when the powers that be can just make decisions without taking the sentiments of its citizens into consideration. This whole debacle smacks of a lot of greasing of palms and self enrichment at the expense of the quality of life of so many. I can't bear the thought of driving along NMR (or Masabalala Yengwa) Avenue without having the pleasure of seeing those horses in their paddocks.

Do us citizens not have 'the right to know' why the grounds at Hoy Park cannot be used for this development – it is close enough to be considered part of the sporting precinct and has always been used as a sporting facility? Please stop spoiling our beautiful city with your thoughtless decisions!

I could go on endlessly lamenting about the number of sporting facilities that have been closed by the Municipality that now stand unoccupied and have become an eyesore. For example the Congella Club where my children played many a baseball game and where in more recent years we could enjoy a good affordable Sunday lunch at the Long Bar.
