Chamber CEO shocked by Eskom suspensions

Durban Chamber's CEO is concerned about the suspension of Eskom board members.

EDITOR – It is with shock that the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry learnt of the independent enquiry commissioned by the Eskom board which has seen four senior executives, including the Chief Executive Officer suspended with immediate effect.

The business community has expressed concerns about the possible aggravation of the already dire energy situation in South Africa which has adversely affected commerce and industry and the whole country. This leadership upheaval within Eskom is causing panic amongst our members due to enormous financial losses that have already been incurred by business with negative consequences on employment and the country’s GDP growth.

On enquiring from Eskom about this potential disruption to business due to the suspension of Eskom’s Chief Executive Officer and other executives, I was assured that there should be no direct impact to power supply as a result of this change, however the usual pressure still remains. Eskom has a plan to appoint interim executives to lead the organisation during the duration of this enquiry.

The Durban Chamber will keep its members informed if there are any further developments in this regard.
