Sale of weapons poses danger

A reader raises concerns over the open sale of dangerous weapons.

EDITOR – At noon on Wednesday 26 Feb my wife and I were attacked in our garden in Sherwood by a young man (±20) wielding a 60cm knife.

In the ensuing struggle the knife broke, but he then attacked both of us with bricks from a flowerbed border.

He eventually left empty handed, and we were treated at the St Augustine’s trauma unit.

Yesterday I was saddened to see similar knives (and some even larger) on display for sale in a tobacconist’s window in Musgrave Centre. How can the authorities permit the sale of such dangerous weapons without any form of protection for members of the public?

Our thanks go to the SAPS Sydenham, Blue Security and the paramedics who patched us up before taking us to hospital for stitching, etc. Special thanks to Satish Dhupelia, the vice-Chair of the Sherwood/Sydenham CPF, who was an absolute star caring for our well-being.
