DA retains Ward 33 of eThekwini in sweeping victory

The Democratic Alliance surged ahead victorious in Ward 33, eThekwini, with a landslide win over contenders, African National Congress (ANC) and UMkhonto WeSizwe Party (MK).

THE Democratic Alliance (DA) sits steadily in Ward 33, eThekwini, after clinching victory by 80.56% of the votes in Wednesday’s by-elections, retaining the ward it has led since 2021. The by-elections saw arch-rivals, the African National Congress (ANC) and the uMkhonto WeSizwe Party (MK), leg behind despite their robust campaigns in the ward this week.

In its victory statement, the DA shared, “We would like to thank all those who united behind the DA as we continue with our mission to rescue SA.

“The Democratic Alliance (DA) is delighted to announce a resounding success in the by-elections held yesterday, contesting 17 wards across the country and emerging victorious in 16 of them. These results not only reflect the DA’s growth but also highlight the unwavering trust that South Africans are placing in our ability to deliver clean, accountable governance.”

Councillor-in-waiting Fran ‘Kay’ Kristopher expressed her gratitude towards the residents who put their trust in her and the party. “Thank you to every leader, coordinator and activist who assisted with the by-election operations in Ward 33. A heartfelt thank you to each voter who came out and voted DA. It is an honour and privilege to now serve you, in representing the DA as your ward 33 councillor,” she said.

Party Leader John Steenhuisen said, “These victories are a clear signal that the DA is the party of choice for those who seek competent, transparent governance. As we move towards the 2026 Local Government Elections, the DA remains steadfast in its commitment to bringing effective, service-driven governance to every corner of South Africa.”

“We thank all South Africans who turned out to support the DA in these by-elections, and we remain determined to continue this upward trajectory, ensuring that all citizens receive the services they deserve under a DA-led government.”

Previous ward councillor Sakhile Mngadi relinquished the reigns following his redeployment to the KZN Provincial legislature in June, leaving his post vacant for three months.

In other by-elections in eThekwini on the same day, the DA scooped Ward 35 and 36, demonstrating a similar upward trend in Ward 6 KwaDukuza and Ward 15 Umdoni. A total of 18 097 residents were registered to vote in Ward 33.
