WATCH: Durban’s eco-warrior puts the planet first

Mbali Mtshali sees her role as highlighting the unique ecological roles of animals and asking people to become ambassadors for the planet.

A FITNESS enthusiast, a conservationist and an ambassador for the planet is how Durban resident Mbali Mtshali sees herself.

Mtshali, who is also a presenter in a popular TV show, sees her role as being an advocate for animals.

She works at uShaka Sea World and the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) as a guest relations guide and marine educator.

“I’m sort of the voice for animals. I work mainly in the aquarium, but I do help out at a number of our other educational exhibits, including Dangerous Creatures. Part of my role is highlighting the unique ecological roles of animals and using that to convert some of our visitors into ambassadors for the planet. In this way, I help them understand the roles between us, as humans, and the flora and fauna that we share the planet with,” she said.

The eco-warrior began volunteering at uShaka Sea World in 2012 and says that one of the biggest threats to the world is climate change.

She also highlighted the plight of the African Penguin which is under threat.

“Our goal here is to raise awareness of their plight and also celebrate them and educate the younger generation on their importance to the ecosystem. Their status informs scientists about the status of the ecosystem and the impacts overfishing, pollution and climate change have on them. For our climate and our oceans, it is so important we keep their numbers going up and do everything we can to protect them so they can continue being a part of the ecosystem,” she said.
