Durban Magistrate’s Court evacuated after bomb threat

Both the SAPS explosives and K9 units are sweeping the building following the threat.

HUNDREDS of people have been evacuated from the Durban Magistrate’s Court after a bomb threat was made on the building on Tuesday morning (July 23).

Members of the public, as well as other officials, evacuated after a person called, stating a bomb in the building would go off at 10:30.

National police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said the building had to be evacuated as a precaution.

“The Explosives and K9 units of the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal conducted a precautionary search and sweep at the Durban Magistrate’s Court. This is after an unknown person called the court and announced that there was a bomb which he said would go off at 10:30. The search was completed, and no bomb was found. The building has been declared safe,” he said.

More than a week ago, Hillcrest High School was evacuated after a similar bomb threat was called in.

That incident turned out to be a hoax.

In Durban North on July 8, two homemade explosive devices were discovered dumped outside the entrance of Musjid ur Rahmaan.

In that case, police bomb technicians were called out to the scene and confirmed the devices consisted of commercial explosives.
