Resistance Park clean-up for Mandela Day

As the country commemorates Mandela Day this month, one organisation in Durban will be revisiting history in the form of a clean-up campaign at the aptly named Resistance Park with its Passive Resistance Monument based on a vital movement in the struggle against apartheid.

AS a contribution to Mandela Day, Sastri College Alumni Association and the eThekwini Municipality will jointly lead a clean-up campaign at the Resistance Park and Passive Resistance Monument on Gale Street this Saturday, July 20. This monument commemorates the passive resistance movement which helped in the struggle against apartheid. The frescos found on the monument illustrate the resistors.

According to the chairperson of Sastri College Alumni Association, Dr Jairam J Reddy, “The Resistance Park and Passive Resistance Monument is listed as one of the 30 Liberation Heritage Sites in Durban and its surroundings and is an important tourist destination of the city. Therefore, it’s a pleasure to be part of such commemorations.”

The City stated: “This highlights that residents and businesses are still not disposing of litter in the correct manner. This irresponsible behaviour poses a threat to humans and the environment. The City calls on all residents to take a bold stand against illegal dumping. Keeping the environment clean is a collective responsibility.”

The general public and fraternal organisations are invited to join in the clean-up. The clean-up will start at 09:00 and continue until 13:00. For more information, contact Dr Jairam Reddy on 074 898 2842.
