Another Victory for Tadu Nare at SPAR Women’s Challenge 2024

Besides an excellent participation and performance by elite athletes, the #ChooseYou-themed ladies' race attracted scores of non-professional runners who showed up for a day of fun and relaxation.

CLEAR blues skies in Durban gave a thumbs-up for this year’s SPAR Women’s 10/5KM Challenge as 10 000 runners touched the finish line at Hollywoodbets King’s Park Stadium on Sunday (June 23).

It was defending champion Tadu Nare who experienced the thrill of victory. She represented Nedbank RC, Ethiopia. She broke her own record by hitting a 00:31:14 mark, securing a R200 000 bag and a car to use for a year. Also from Ethiopia, Diniya Abaraya (18) did it for the junior category.

Nare is no stranger to the colourful race. Apart from begging the grand prize last year, she has been participating since 2019. She took a break in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

She reckons this was her best time and record in the race.

“It’s always a pleasure to be in Durban for the SPAR Women’s Challenge. The people are always as lovely as the weather, and the atmosphere is always electrifying,” she said excitedly.

She added that she was more enthused by witnessing more youth taking part with each successive year. “I see an improvement in youth participation, and I would like to encourage them to keep training and to stay goal-orientated. This kind of discipline will carry them throughout their life, on and off the running tracks,” she concluded.

With this race done and dusted, she will start preparing for her next one in Europe soon.

Glenrose Xaba (Boxer Superstores AC) and Neheng Khathala (Hollywoodbets AC) came in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
