Precious laces up for SPAR Women’s race in Durban

This will be the 34th running of the challenge which takes place this Sunday, June 23.

AMBASSADOR for the Durban SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge, Precious Mthembu, said she is excited about this weekend’s event which takes place in and around the Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium on Sunday, June 23.

This will be the 34th running of the challenge with entries capped at 12 000.

The theme for this year’s race is #ChooseYou with the underlying message of motivating oneself and encouraging women to prioritise self-care, both for their mental and physical well-being.

Mthembu, who is the current Baby Proteas (U21) coach and an educator at Danville Park Girls’ High School, said she will be taking on the 5km with the BSS Stars netball team.

“I will be running with my development netball team, BSS Starlets. I am super excited for the challenge. Even though most people know me for my time as a former SPAR Proteas Netball player, I also consider myself a runner. It’s going to be an amazing event, and my hope as an ambassador is for it to continue to grow,” she said.

She also expanded on the theme for this year’s race.

“It is about choosing ourselves; we are often selfless but also need to think about the well-being of our lives as women. We, as women, go through so much, and we forget to put ourselves first sometimes,” she said.

The Challenge route remains unchanged from the 2023 event, with the fast and flat out-and-back course starting under the shadow of the Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium, on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, and finishing on the outer fields of this iconic Durban landmark.

The 10km race begins at 08:00 and the 5km race at 09:00.
