Pregnant woman dies after horror M4 crash

Due to the severity of her injuries, the woman, believed to be in her 30s, died at hospital, and doctors' attempts to save her unborn child were also unsuccessful.

A PREGNANT mother and her unborn child died after a horror crash on the M4 (northbound after the Blue Lagoon off-ramp) on Tuesday morning.

The woman, who was nine months pregnant, was taken to hospital after going into cardiac arrest.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the accident involved two vehicles that collided in a rear-end accident.

“Paramedics triaged the scene and found that eight people had sustained various injuries. One lady in her thirties, who was nine months pregnant, was in a critical condition, and she went into a state of cardiac arrest on scene. Advanced Life Support Paramedics performed resuscitation on the lady, and a decision was made to rush to hospital for assistance.

“Paramedics arrived at a nearby hospital where a gynaecologist was waiting to assist. Despite their best efforts, both mom and baby passed away due to their injuries. The remaining seven patients, including three children, were stabilised on the scene before being transported to various Durban hospitals,” he said.

Jamieson said that at this stage, the events leading up to the collision are unknown and that police were in attendance.
