The goal is friendship for young soccer stars

Eden College learners, Adyaan Mahomed, Agape Simelane and Samyar Mohammadi, have been selected to compete in Cape Town from April 26 to May 1 at Shelley Road Sports Complex at the Salt River Black Pool Football Club’s Super 7’s Festival.

THREE Eden College learners, Adyaan Mahomed, Agape Simelane and Samyar Mohammadi, have been selected to compete in Cape Town from April 26 to May 1 at Shelley Road Sports Complex at the Salt River Black Pool Football Club’s Super 7’s Festival. According to the Salt River Black Pool Football Club Facebook page, the tournament is a unique 7-a-side youth football festival for U8s, U10s and U12s.

Adyaan said the boys were selected based on their performance in practice. “We practise at our school, Eden College, and we are part of the Dragons High Performance Training football club, and because of how well we were doing in our practices, we were selected to go and represent our club in Cape Town this April.”

Adyaan said he started playing soccer when he was four and a half. “I play as the mid-fielder. I really enjoy the sport because it’s a team sport, and when we win, we can all celebrate together.”

“I started playing soccer when I was six years old. I really like the position I play; I’m a defender so I make sure that the goalie, my second favourite position on a soccer team, stays protected,” said Samyar.

Agape says he plays the upfront position. “My favourite thing about soccer is the feeling I get when I score a goal or someone on my team scores a goal. Also, in the position I play, I have to defend, and I enjoy that part, as well.”

Adyaan said he’s grateful for his teammates. “We have a lot of support from our school, and we are all so excited to be going to Cape Town together. I will say about my teammate, Agape, he’s so quick – he’s one of the fastest runners I’ve seen, and Samyar is like a big wall in front of the goal – he doesn’t let anything get past him. I’m really happy and excited to be going to play alongside these guys.”

Agape says his parents and teachers have been very supportive, and he’s looking forward to playing in the upcoming game with his teammates and friends. “About my teammates, I can say that Adyaan is so good at free kicks, and we can always count on him if we have a penalty kick, and Sam is an amazing defender, and I trust both of them very much.”

“One of my biggest supporters is my mum. She says I must go to this competition and defend like a warrior. I also trust my teammates very much: Adyaan is a star shooter and he’s the best at striking; Agape is so fast and it’s like the ball sticks to him like a magnet, and he scores very well,” said Samyar.
