Durban Metro Police officer appears in court filled with slain victim’s loved ones

The tearful family and friends of slain Durban Metro Police officer filled the courtroom. The accused is facing two charges – one count of murder and one count of theft.

THE Durban Magistrate’s Court was packed this morning when the grieving family and friends of Durban Metro Police officer Yolanda Bianca Khuzwayo showed up to witness the first appearance of the 27-year-old man accused of her murder.

Durban Metro Police Officer Constable Sizwe Clinton Ngema made his first appearance in court this morning and stood emotionless in the dock.

The Durban Metro Police officer was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning, March 31, after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and fellow metro police officer inside a flat on Joseph Nduli Street in Durban in the early hours of Sunday morning.  Graphic videos of her final moments of life were also shared on social media and have been circulated widely.

On Sunday, Durban Metro Police spokesperson Boysie Zungu confirmed the incident to the Berea Mail and said that he could not comment further as the matter was under investigation by the police.

The accused is facing one count of murder and one count of theft. At the court hearing, the state alleged that one count of premeditated murder should be added to the accused’s charges, labelling the case as a domestic matter and a case of gender-based violence.

The accused remained emotionless as his charges were read out to him and as the loved ones of Bianca Khuzwayo broke down in the courtroom.

The case has been remanded for bail consideration to Tuesday, April 9.
