Safety tips to prevent house burglaries

Captain Poobalan Naidoo says that robberies and burglaries are occurring because residents aren't safeguarding their homes properly.

WITH the New Year in full swing, Captain Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS says that criminals are more active than ever, and the Berea SAPS have been receiving multiple reports of home burglaries and robberies.

“Residential burglaries are occurring where the complainants are complacent and not taking the necessary precautions. Here are some safety tips to help residents keep themselves, their homes and belongings safe,” said Naidoo.

– Ensure that you remember to activate your alarm system.

– When leaving your windows open for pets, make sure they are not windows that burglars can use to intrude into your home.

– Ensure that there is adequate lighting on the premises so you are able to see movement on your property.

– Doors and windows should have solid burglar guards – this can decrease the risk of robberies and home invasions.

– Ensure that garage doors are not left open, especially when there are items exposed.

“These are some of the reasons that crime is occurring, which can be prevented, so kindly adhere to these safety precautions, and together, we can win the war against crime,” said Naidoo.
