Classic Steel and Vintage Cycle Club cycle for charity

The annual Christmas Hat Ride took place on Sunday to collect stationery to aid iCare – Giving Children a Future, a home that houses young homeless boys.

CLASSIC Steel and Vintage Cycle Club Durban braced for gloomy Sunday morning weather, on December 11, for their Christmas Hat Ride cycle around Durban’s Battery Beach in a bid to raise stationery donations. The cyclists met at Pirates Lifesaving Club in their vintage bikes, donning Christmas hats and gathering together all the stationery they had collected for their fundraiser.

The annual Christmas Hat Ride, organised by Eric Prinsloo, took place on Sunday, to collect stationery to aid iCare – Giving Children a Future, a home that houses young homeless boys. “Our Annual Christmas Hat Rides have been about collecting toys and educational materials for kids in children home’s, but this year, we decided to do something different and collect stationery instead for the children of iCare.

“Our club is very community-oriented, and we make it a point to make a difference in our community. And this is the best way we know how – to ride and make a difference,” said Prinsloo. The social community club is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of vintage bicycles. After attending a cycling vintage show in Cape Town years ago, Prinsloo came up with the idea to start his own vintage cycling club in Durban.

They meet once every fortnight for a ride, breakfast and catch-up. “Although we have occasionally done these rides for ourselves, this is the second time that we did it for charity. Last year, we had collected and donated toys, and this year, we decided to collect stationery for iCare, just to ease the load of having to look and find stationery donations,” added Prinsloo.

More about iCare – Giving Children a Future

iCare runs a rehabilitation programme for street children. The non-profit organisation offers laundry facilities, cooked nutritious meals and psycho-social intervention by social workers who work with the boys’ daily programmes. The boys are then moved onto the Rehabilitation Programme (for 12 weeks) where they live in a house, and after graduation, they either return to their family homes, where they go on to our Aftercare Programme or they get enrolled into a school. iCare supplies them with uniforms and stationery. If for whatever reason they cannot return home after graduation, iCare has three family houses where the boys live as a family unit and attend local schools.
