IN an effort to raise funds for the local retirement facility, Essenwood Residential Home will be hosting a Christmas Night Market on Friday, December 1 at 246 Stephen Dlamini Road from 16:00 to 20:00.

According to the general manager at the residential home, Chad Saus, there will be live music, food, clothing, jewellery and arts and crafts on sale. “We will have guys braaiing boerewors, we will have a coffee garden and a tea garden, there will be fruits and vegetables, pickles, Christmas decorations and footwear – just name it and we will have it on sale. So the idea is that people can come and do some of their Christmas shopping at the market.”
The retirement facility is over 100 years old and has a long history within the Essenwood community. Essenwood Residential Home had its beginnings as early as 1855, when the Durban Benevolent Society was formed. The Society established a Home for Aged Women in Victoria Street and subsequently moved to Essenwood Road when a larger and more suitably-sited building was needed. Walter Greenacre donated the land, and a bequest from his father, Sir Benjamin Greenacre, made it possible for Essenwood Residential Home to be erected on the land. The home was completed and started taking residents from 1921.

In 1950, Essenwood acquired autonomy from the Durban Benevolent Society by the establishment of a Company Limited by Guarantee incorporated under the Companies Act of 1926.
In 1973, it was decided to convert the Rutherford Wing into a frail-aged home, employing full-time nursing staff. This change, coupled with the establishment of a fully-equipped clinic, meant that residents would have a sense of security and well-being, whatever their needs, for their lifetime.
The retirement home now provides care for all stages of an elderly woman’s life, from independent living, to assisted living, to frail care.
