Beloved Garden Grove resident turns 100

Staff and residents gathered at the dining hall of the retirement facility to make Daly’s day memorable as they surrounded her with love and presents.

THE halls of Garden Grove Retirement Centre were filled with sounds of jubilation and singing on November 17 as the local

retirement home based in Morningside celebrated Dorothy Daly’s 100th birthday. Staff and residents gathered at the dining hall of the retirement facility to make Daly’s day memorable as they surrounded her with love and presents.

Daly’s friend of 10 years, Joan Rout, gave some insight into Dorothy’s life. “We wanted to make the day special for her because Dorothy does not have any relatives at all. She had a twin sister who passed away four days after their 99th birthday last year, and she doesn’t know any other living relatives. She got married late in life, so she never had any children. She worked all her life as a short-hand typist from the time she left school to the time she retired. One of my favourite things about Dorothy is that she is someone who helps people without making a fuss – she’s a very quiet and helpful person, and she gets along with everyone. She had a fall a couple of months back, but she has recovered well, and at the age of 100, her mind is still fine.”
