Rhumbelow film fun

Join the Rhumbelow film lovers’ regular get-together! With cinemas either closing or becoming really expensive, and Netflix becoming very stay-at-home-predictable, enjoy the notion of an old-fashioned movie night out with friends.

A once-off subscription of R300 for June till the end of the year will allow you entrance to all their movies. (The very occasional special is extra.)

Roland Stansell and the Rhumbelow team have curated a careful mix of classics, art-house titles, unusual finds, crowd-pleasers and pure nostalgia. Most have one screening. The Rhumbelow Theatre offers regular movies on their excellent big screen, run as a club. Book a table and bring friends or come solo and meet fellow film buffs.

The Rhumbelow Theatre is located at 42 Cunningham Road in Umbilo. Food is available at the venue, and booking is essential. For more information, email roland@stansell.co.za or call 082 499 8636.

JOMBA! Dance Concert

Presented by the Centre for Creative Arts and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the festival offers a myriad of dance performances, workshops, talks and screen dance at venues around Durban.

This year, the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience presented by the Centre for Creative Arts (UKZN) celebrates its 25th anniversary, offering dance fans a 13-day treat of world-class contemporary dance that will see both local and international dance makers converge on Durban from 29 August to 10 September. There are still several shows to see this weekend at the following venues:

Woza Wienties – Howard College Dome: Friday, September 8 at 18:00 and Saturday, September 9 at 18:00.
Unknown Realms – Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre: Saturday, September 9 at 19:30 and Sunday, September 10 at 14:30

Woza Wenties! is a partly autobiographical solo offering by contemporary live artist Lorin Sookool. Interpreting the dancing body as a previously colonised state, Sookool sets out to understand her own erasure by deconstructing the colonial projects undertaken in many South African schooling systems post-1994.

Unknown Realms is composed of two dances:

1. The Night Before Tomorrow
Choreography by Serge Aimé Coulibaly (Burkina Faso) The Night Before Tomorrow is a metaphorical night where people try to do their last dance before an uncertain tomorrow. Performed to a supercharged soundscape, this sensational new work by Serge Aimé Coulibaly questions what frustrates you in the world today. Imagine… people meeting to escape their everyday life, but is it really possible to escape from the reality of this world?

2. Mana – The Power Within
Choreography by Vincent Sekwato Mantsoe (France / South Africa)
Sacred, ritualistic and shamanic, the word ‘Mana’ is used in over twenty-four countries; it is universal; we can all feel it when people and things possess this power. Tracing the journey of past lives, this physical work unifies beliefs and cultures – it’s the ultimate life force, the stuff of which magic is made.

Tickets are R80 or R50 (students, scholars, pensioners) and booking is through Computicket.
