Denis Hurley Centre to honour Paddy Kearney

Every year, the Denis Hurley Centre marks Paddy Kearney's birthday with a memorial lecture, and this year, the lecture will be held on Sunday, August 27, preceded by a concert at the Denis Hurley Centre on Saturday, August 26.

AUGUST 28 would have been the 81st birthday of the Denis Hurley Centre founder, Paddy Kearney, who sadly passed almost five years ago, in November of 2018.

Every year, the Denis Hurley Centre marks the religious and human rights leader’s birthday with a memorial lecture, jointly organised with DUT, the Phoenix Settlement Trust and the Gandhi Development Trust (of which he was also chair).

According to the Denis Hurley Centre director, Raymond Perrier, this year’s lecture will be held on Sunday, August 27 at 14:00, at the DHC, and will be presented by the director himself. He will be drawing from his recently accepted PhD thesis written about Paddy and will focus particularly on the way in which Paddy was inspired by Gandhi. The lecture will be followed by a tea to enable those who knew and loved Paddy to celebrate his birthday.

“Entrance is free, but please reach out to us at news@denishurleycentre.org to help us know numbers for refreshments.  There is safe paid parking behind Emmanuel Cathedral. Books about Paddy and Hurley will be on sale with payment via cash and Zapper,” said Perrier.

“The day before, appropriately in Paddy Kearney Way, outside the DHC, we will be hosting a free concert to mark Women’s Month,” said Perrier.

WOMUZO will be presenting a free concert outside the DHC on Saturday, August 26 around 11:00.

WOMUZO is a project of the UKUSA Arts Programme which has been running music classes at the DHC since 2015.  It is a mentorship project for women instrumentalists who have an interest in jazz and South African contemporary music, made possible with support from the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC). The women have been mentored by professional singers, Nosihe Zulu and Lu Dlamini, who guide the young performers by sharing their knowledge and skills.
