Doctor leaves legacy of love

For 25 years, Dr Ian Macleod dedicated his medical expertise pro bono to those in need.

WELL-KNOWN physician Dr Ian Macleod, a long-standing member of Musgrave Methodist Church and founder of the Kathleen Voysey Clinic, has passed away at the age of 91.

Through the clinic, Macleod dedicated his medical expertise pro bono to those in need. He visited the clinic each Thursday for the last 25 years since its inception in 1998 until shortly before passing away on July 1.

Macleod was born in Canada and sailed to South Africa as a young boy with his family during WW2. He was educated at Rondebosch High School and went on to study medicine (MBChB) at Cape Town University. Macleod went on to read for his postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) at UCT and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP).

Macleod was in private practice as a specialist gastroenterologist with Davidson and Partners, based at St Augustine’s Hospital, for many years and attended to many. He would also travel regularly to Northern Zululand to attend to patients at Manguzi Mission Hospital, among others, free of charge. Macleod is described by his friends and family as a gentleman, a dedicated professional and a legend.

Mcleod leaves his three children, Wendy, John and Rod and their partners and four grandchildren, Jessica, Jason, Cristan and Joshua. The Kathleen Voysey Clinic which operates as a pop-up clinic one morning per week, provides primary healthcare, free of charge, to many of Durban’s homeless, aged, vulnerable and unemployed who cannot afford medical care.

The clinic is now needing additional medical staff to volunteer their services for one morning a week. This would be best suited to a recently retired doctor, nursing sister or pharmacist or for a community-minded healthcare professional who could volunteer a morning of their time to assist.

Community members who are able to assist the clinic in any way with these needs are encouraged to contact Dr Rob Smith at 076 940 9460, Gregory Whitehead at 031 2012005 or 082 8061368, email greg@musgravemethodist.co.za or call Sr Cindy Smith at 083 3955493 for further information.
