Blind seamstresses sew blankets for homeless

Denis Hurley Centre is hoping for another 100 blankets to be donated.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society (KZNBDS) visited Denis Hurley Centre (DHC) on Tuesday, July 18 to deliver 50 blankets in the Spirit of Nelson Mandela Day.

Yegeshne Naidu, PRO for KZNBDS, said a team of six blind seamstresses sewed 50 blankets which were distributed to the Denis Hurley Centre for homeless people to use.

“They spent the whole of last week sewing the blankets,” she said.

“Denis Hurley Centre has homeless people arriving on a daily basis for meals, and we thought it was a worthy cause to give back to them on Mandela Day. As an NPO, we often receive donations, and this was our turn to give back to society,” added Naidu.

Raymond Perrier, spokesperson of the Denis Hurley Centre, echoed these views.
“It was wonderful and particularly joyous that an organisation, which is often on the receiving end of people’s generosity, were the ones giving back,” said Perrier.

He added that the centre is continuing to collect blankets for the homeless.
“At Denis Hurley Centre, we can only hand out blankets when we have enough for everyone. So we are still hoping for another 100 blankets to be donated,” he said.

Perrier said several organisations and local businesses had shown their support for DHC on Nelson Mandela Day.
“We are also grateful to SAPR West Street, Boxer Stores, Norton Rose Fulbright (law firm) and Umbilo SAPS who have all made generous donations today,” concluded Perrier.
