New mural unveiled at Point Waterfront Canal to honour fish

THE South African Association for Marine Biological Research teamed up with artist Giffy to create a special mural that pays tribute to two of uShaka Marine World's Giant grouper fish, one of which has sadly recently passed away.

THE South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) enlisted the help of local street artist and nature lover, Giffy Duminy, who is known for his street art and paintings that can be seen all over Durban, to pay tribute to two uShaka Sea World Giant grouper fish, Deon and Stanley.

According to a statement released on the SAAMBR Facebook page, Deon was part of the aquarium family for 18 years and sadly passed earlier this year.

“The curatorial team cared for Deon around the clock for seven days, but her advanced age meant there was nothing we could do to save her life other than keep her comfortable right until the end,” said the statement.

However, thanks to the incredible work of Duminy, Deon and her friend, Stanley, will continue to inspire people as they walk towards the ocean.

“The absolute care and dedication by the SAAMBR curatorial team towards these beautiful fish inspired Giffy, and he offered to gift us with his talents while creating a memory of Deon for our team and the public. Deon and Stanley now greet the staff as they arrive at work each day, which is making Deon’s loss a little bit lighter,” said SAAMBR.

The art-wall feature can be seen on Camperdown Road, on the way to the uShaka Pier.
