Social media users ‘talk trash’ about upturned Morningside bins

Social media speculations were not in short supply as many tried to answer the question, ‘Where are all the bins?’

SOCIAL media users had plenty to say when former radio personality Keri Miller took to TikTok to share a video. Miller asked where all the bins had gone as she filmed several upturned bins along the perimeter of Mitchell Park in Morningside.

The comment section blew up with all sorts of speculations.

“They turn them upside in Hillcrest, too, apparently to stop people starting fires in them,” suggested one social media user.

“It could be because monkeys have been frequenting the area, causing havoc with rubbish,” read another comment.

Some further speculated that criminals were turning the bins upside down to give them a leg-up to climb street poles and steal copper wires. Berea Mail reached out to Ward 31 Councillor Ernest Smith to find out more.

“A lot of homeless people use the bins for food and don’t bother repacking everything they have taken out. One must remember that there are various elements that will use their environments to their advantage. Some are legitimately looking for leftover food while others are looking for a ‘quick fix’ to making money through any means possible,” he said.

We also asked the eThekwini Municipality to shed some light on the matter.

“We have sent an official to investigate, the bins were not found upside down,” said the City. *
