SAPS nab gun-wielding suspects in CBD

One suspect was arrested on Anton Lembede Street at 15:00, and another was nabbed on Diakonia Avenue at 20:30.

POLICE arrested several suspects with unlicensed firearms in the Durban Central Business District (CBD) this weekend.

A gun-wielding suspect was arrested while dealing with stolen cellphones on Anton Lembede Street on Saturday, June 10 at about 15:00.

Durban Central Crime Prevention members were patrolling in Durban’s CBD when they received a tip-off.

According to SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Zanele Khomo, the suspect (28) was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and cellphones suspected to be stolen.

“Police received information about a suspect that was dealing with stolen cellphones and robbing people. Members proceeded [towards where he was supposed to be] and found the suspect parked in his motor vehicle on Anton Lembede Street,” said Khomo.

Khomo added that a firearm and two cellphones were found in the suspect’s possession.

In a separate incident on the same day, at about 20:30, Durban Central Crime Prevention members arrested one suspect (30) who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm on Diakonia Avenue.

“Field-unit members were patrolling along the Durban CBD when they noticed a vehicle with no number plate. The vehicle had three occupants,” said Khomo.

According to Khomo, two of the passengers fled on foot toward Albert Park as police approached while the driver of the vehicle was apprehended and found with an unlicensed firearm with two rounds of ammunition in their possession.

“The suspect was arrested and was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Khomo.

Both suspects appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court.
