Durban’s newest Gospel Icon Discovery winner crowned
Sikhosana walked away with a cash prize of R50 000, a recording deal, and will be mentored by established artists in the industry.
NELISIZWE Sikhosana could not contain her excitement when she was crowned the 2023 Gospel Icon Discovery (GID) winner at the grand finale extravaganza on Sunday, June 11. The glittering event took place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre where Sikhosana soared above her competitors.
In a tightly contested Gospel Icon Discovery competition, Nelisizwe Sikhosana emerged victorious and was crowned the City’s Gospel Icon 2023. She towered above her competitors, Sindi Ngidi from Molweni, who took second place, and Neliswa Dlamini from Hammarsdale, who took third place.
Sikhosana walked away with a cash prize of R50 000, a recording deal, and will be mentored by established artists in the industry as she launches her gospel career. Sikhosana thanked the municipality’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit for providing her with a platform to launch her music career.
“I am very grateful to the municipality for this amazing opportunity. Winning the competition will take my music career to the next level,” she said. “This has been a long journey of perseverance. I am looking forward to the road ahead, and I am ready to showcase my talent.”

Skhosana from KwaMashu was one of many young people who auditioned for the GID talent search hosted by the municipality in March and April this year. Head of the municipality’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit, Dr Simphiwe Ndlovu, said they are happy to have crowned the city’s latest Gospel icon.
He said this year’s event celebrates 10 years of the GID, which has positively impacted the youth. “We continue to be amazed by the talent the city has. It is also an indication that young people need exposure and opportunities to be presented to them,” said Ndlovu.
