Sewage leak causes a stink

Residents concerns grow as the problem was reported weeks ago in May.

A SEWAGE leak is causing a stink for residents living on ZK Matthews Road in Glenwood as sewage water runs into their properties.

Graham Braum said the problem was reported weeks ago in May.

“Every morning, there is [sewage] water running onto the pavement and down the road. It is also coming through the [boundary] wall and into our carport. This happens every morning,” said Braum.

He suspects there may be a blockage in the sewer system down the road from his house.

“[Sewage] builds up overnight, and in the morning, it backs up into our neighbour’s manhole and overflows. The neighbour reported the problem and had plumbers come in and check his plumbing system – no problems were found. The municipality then came out and had a look three weeks ago and didn’t come back,” said Braum.

Graham Braum says sewage water is leaking onto the road and spilling into his property every morning.

The leak is raising health concerns for Braum’s family.
“It smells every morning. We have a newborn baby in the house, and we can actually smell the sewage in our house, so it’s a health hazard. People walking or jogging by have to step into the road, as well,” he said.

Another concern for Braum is a crack in the retaining wall along his driveway where sewage water spills across the area.
“It’s an inconvenience for us. When you get into you car, you have to step over [the sewage water]. There’s a crack in the wall. If that wall collapses, it’s right next to the car,” he said.

The eThekwini Municipality was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
