Central Durban car licence office re-opens

The public can visit the centre to register vehicles, transfer ownership of vehicles or apply for permits and other related services.

A TEMPORARY Motor Licence Office in central Durban got the green light this week as MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, inspected the facility.

Located on the corner of Smiso Nkwanyana and Percy Osborn roads, the temporary facilities that the Motor Licence Offices will be located in, officially opened on June 1.

In a statement, the department says the centre has been closed for two years after the building was condemned and declared unsafe to be used. The building was further affected and damaged by the floods.

MEC Hlomuka said, “We wish to apologise to members of the public and our staff who have had to be inconvenienced during this period. The closure also caused a serious backlog in the renewal and registration of vehicles which affected ordinary vehicle owners and car dealerships.”

According to the Department, the centre conducts about 70 000 vehicle transactions every month, making it the biggest in the province. It is also important in the revenue collection of the province.

All services will be rendered at the centre, from registration of vehicles, transfer of ownership, issuing of permits and other related services.
