UPDATE: Umbilo church finally receives help with sewage crisis

The sewage leak at St Cyprian’s Church in Umbilo is finally being fixed after months.

AFTER months, a massive sewage leak at St Cyprian’s Church in Umbilo is finally being fixed. According to Father Dane Elsworth of St Cyprian’s Church, eThekwini Municipality workers began working to remedy the sewage crisis on Saturday, May 6. This after a vehicle was engulfed as a motorist drove into a massive hole left by the leak on Umbilo Road on April 28.

Father Dane Elsworth of St Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Umbilo said this is the second incident where a vehicle had been driven into the hole.

“Before this most recent accident, there were no barricades to warn road users about the hole full of sewage water on Umbilo Road. That hole was dug up by the municipality in early April in an attempt to remedy the situation at St Cyprian’s because there is a water pipe in that spot that is connected to the church’s pipe. A few weeks before the accident on April 28, a motorcycle was driven straight into the hole. Thankfully, no one was injured in both incidents and barricades have now been put up, but if the situation isn’t resolved soon, someone could get seriously hurt.”

Elsworth says that although the situation is being remedied at the moment, raw sewage has been running into the church’s grounds since March and the church grounds have been damaged to the extent that they will need to do a complete renovation once the sewage stops flowing.
