Stella Running Club calls for community to enter fun run

According to Gerals van Wyk, a Stella Running Club committee member, the Stella Run has been around for more than 20 years, but Marshalls World of Sport has sponsored the run for the last five years.

STELLA Sports Club will be hosting the Marshalls World of Sport Stella Royal this Sunday at Stella Sports Club in Glenwood. The event will include a 25km run, a 10km run/walk and a 5km fun run. According to Gerals van Wyk, a Stella Running Club committee member, the Stella Run has been around for more than 20 years, but Marshall World of Sport have sponsored the run for the last five years.

“It’s a community event that encourages all other running clubs to partake in our 5, 10 and 25km walk/run, which is part of the Vitality Challenge. There are three runs that Vitality is having – you can earn points for completing the runs, and there are medals. It involves walking, running and community spirit,” said Van Wyk.

Local schools Glenwood Preparatory and Glenwood High School will offer their support and encouragement along the route. “There will be a water table, which students will man, which is very festive and fun-filled. The Community Chest will also play their part by hosting a table for registration on Saturday as well as a water table during the run on Sunday,” said Van Wyk.

Van Wyk says that the local non-profit organisation, Community Chest, will be selling items at registration on Saturday for their organisation. “We encourage all participants to support. Stella has many developing runners who are sponsored by the club with kits, running shoes and race registration fees. These monies come out of the proceeds from the Stella Royal.”

The Stella Running Club committee member says that local residents are encouraged to be on the side of the road on Sunday, cheering the runners and walkers along their way. “Local residents may assist with marshalling on the Sunday and can pop down to Stella on Saturday between 10:00 and 16:00 to be allocated an area. We look forward to a fun-filled day of walking, running and community spirit,” said Van Wyk.
