Local artist debuts new album

Dave Wright will be launching his album titled Quattro, on Saturday, April 29 at the Westville Theatre Club.

GLENWOOD resident and musician Dave Wright will be launching his album titled Quattro, on Saturday, April 29 at the Westville Theatre Club. The self-taught musician says that when he was a teenager, he realised that he wanted to write and play music. “Playing music is like being a painter with a blank canvas. You start with nothing. I always have a number of ideas flying around my mind and find writing lyrics fairly easy.”

Wright plays the Bass and Acoustic Guitar. “My parents were totally against my interest in music, and I had to wait until my first pay cheque to buy a bass guitar. That was in my early twenties. I play acoustic music with a hint of electric guitar, keyboards, and drums on the songs. If I am playing in a band, then I prefer doing more punk/metal music,” said Wright.

The Glenwood resident has been in bands for many years. “The most well-known bands I’ve been in were The Mystery Girls and Bad Murphy. I have released three acoustic solo albums titled Seven Minutes to Ebisu, Tomorrow, and Kiss the Sky.”

Wright says he wants people to enjoy his music. “It is generally easy on the ear, although I do like an edge, especially on my vocals.”

The local musician says his new album, Quattro, was recorded with his long-time recording partner and guitarist/vocalist for The Mystery Girls, Peter Kunst, at Kunst’s studio in Germany during July and August 2022. “Peter and I work very well together, and he finished off the production after my return to Durban. There are some interesting deviations on this album; there is a synthesiser heavy track and a full-on punk track,” said Wright.

Wright says that the event on April 29 starts at 19:00. “Please can people be there early. Entrance is R50, and you can pay at the door. I will have CDs on sale at R100 each. Quattro and my previous albums will all be available on all the streaming platforms from Saturday, April 29.”

Wright’s advice to aspiring musicians: “Practise, practise, practise. Follow your heart, and just keep on, even when things aren’t going well.”
