SAPS arrest 48 for heroin possession over Easter

Among the arrests made were 48 suspects arrested for possession of heroin and one suspect for attacking police.

POLICE arrested 48 people for possession of heroin over the Easter weekend during a crime-prevention campaign.

According to Captain Muzi Maphumulo, spokesperson for Durban Central SAPS, police kicked off  Operation Paseka in the Durban precinct on Thursday, April 6, the eve of the long weekend.

“Durban Central held a multidisciplinary operation with SAPS, Metro Police and other stakeholders at high crime areas and at taxi ranks, which was followed by a roadblock on the M4 Ruth First Highway. The operations were visited by the Premier of KZN and the mayor of Ethekwini. Awareness pamphlets relating to road safety and other crime hints were also distributed,” said Maphumulo.

During the operation, 129 vehicles were stopped and searched.

“Many traffic violation notices were issued with particular focus on vehicles with no licence plates. This resulted in 50 prosecutions,” said Maphumulo.

He added that the operations continued into the weekend, yielding several arrests, including 48 suspects arrested for possession of heroin; one suspect arrested for possession of crystal meth; one suspect arrested for business robbery; one suspect arrested for possession of a firearm; one suspect attested for attacking police, and four suspects arrested for armed robbery and possession of firearms and dangerous weapons.

According to Maphumulo, SAPS also recovered various items, including 125 drug capsules, 13 knives and seven cellphones.
