Good Samaritan reunites musician with bagpipes

Stacy Burness said the man recovered her bagpipes and brought them to her out of the goodness of his heart.

LAST week, in the March 24 edition of the Berea Mail, it was reported that Berea resident Stacy Burness’s rare bagpipes were stolen from the boot of her car in early March.

Following the release of the story, Burness received a call from a Morningside resident claiming to have her bagpipes. “I received a call from a man who said he had bought the bagpipes from two men selling them at a taxi rank in Berea. He bought the bagpipes for R300 and says he was informed by a friend who had seen the article on Thursday, March 24, that mine had recently been stolen.”

Burness says she was sceptical at first but continued to communicate with the man with hopes that her instrument may have been recovered. “I continued to speak with him over messenger, and we agreed to meet at a central point after he sent me pictures and the bagpipes looked very similar to mine.”

She met with the man in Berea two days later, and she says she recognised her bagpipes immediately. “Surprisingly, everything was there! Bagpipes are made up of a few different parts, and when I initially purchased mine, I wanted to have the best pieces, some of which I imported from Scotland. The bagpipes were in perfect condition, and I felt so relieved when I finally got them back.”

Burness said the man recovered her bagpipes and brought them to her out of the goodness of his heart. “In the end, there was no reward exchange. He just said that when he realised the bagpipes he had purchased had been the ones stolen from me, he wanted to help. He did not have to do that, but he went out of his way to help me get them back. He’s definitely a Good Samaritan.”
