Suspect (21) arrested for rape charges

According to police reports, the complainant fell asleep while drinking with friends and later found herself in an unknown room with an unknown man.

A SUSPECT has been arrested for rape following an incident in the market area in Durban’s Central Business District.

According to SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Zanele Khomo, the suspect was arrested on Tuesday, March 21, at approximately 01: 00, on Etna Lane near Julius Nyerere Street, by Durban Central Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit members who found the suspect in possession of unlicensed ammunition.

“The suspect, aged 21 years, was arrested and charged with rape and possession of unlicensed ammunition,” said Khomo.

This follows an incident in the market area on March 20 at about 22:00.

“The complainant, aged 37, was drinking with friends, whom she knew as street vendors, in the market area on March 20. While they were drinking, an unknown man with blond hair came and bought some beers. He was very aggressive,” said Khomo.

According to Khomo, the complainant fell asleep while they were still drinking, and later, she found herself in an unknown room where she realised she had been raped.

“The man next to her was fast asleep, so the victim escaped and called security for assistance as she was not feeling well. She was taken to a local hospital for medical attention,” said Khomo.

The matter was reported to police, and a case of rape was opened at Durban Central SAPS for investigation. The  Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit took over the investigation and arrested the suspect.
