Two shot by rifle-wielding suspect on Umbilo Road
This adds to a recent spate of shootings in and around the Berea area since December 2022.
A SUSPECT wielding a rifle shot and hit two men on Umbilo Road today, March 22, at approximately 13:45.
This after five people were shot and killed yesterday, March 21. Two men were shot on Carters Avenue in Berea at approximately 13.30. An hour later, a man and woman were shot and killed in Springfield, and a nine-year-old girl sustained gunshot wounds and later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
Commenting on the Umbilo Road incident, eThekwini District communications officer Captain Carmen Rhynes said, “It is alleged that two men were seated at a car wash while their vehicles were being washed. A silver Toyota Etios was driven up and stopped at the entrance; one man jumped out of the vehicle with a rifle and fired shots at the two men [who were seated],” said Rhynes.

The victims were rushed to hospital for medical care after sustaining gunshot wounds.
“The first victim sustained a gunshot wound in the stomach and right hand. The second victim was shot in the head. The first victim was transported to the hospital by his vehicle and the second victim was transported by an ambulance,” continues Rhynes.

She added that no arrests have been made at this stage.
“Five empty rifle cartridges were found at the scene. The motive is unknown. A case of attempted murder is being investigated,” concluded Rhynes.
