Resident seeks stolen bagpipes

Berea resident Stacy Burness is offering a R2 000 reward for the return of her rare bagpipes, which were stolen from the boot of her car.

BEREA resident Stacy Burness is appealing to anyone who may have information about her rare and valuable bagpipes that were stolen from the boot of her car on the evening of March 12.

“My pipes were stolen from the boot of my car on the evening of March 12. They were not visible so my car must have been jammed. There was no damage to the boot lock nor the doors of the car. I was at the Avondale Centre and also in the carpark at LaBella restaurant that evening,” said Burness.

Burness said a case has been opened at Berea Police Station. Burness ordered her bagpipes from Chris Terry in 2016, and the waiting period was two years – she received them in September 2018.

“Chris Terry is from Grahamstown, a renowned piper and the only person in South Africa who makes bagpipes for the South African Piping Community,” said Burness.

She is also Honorary Piper to the Durban Caledonian society and says the bagpipes are sentimental to her. “My bagpipes are sentimental to me as they were custom-made for me. It is not as if I can walk into a music shop and buy a set of bagpipes. Every musician has a sentimental connection with their instruments,” said Burness.

She is offering a R2 000 reward for the return of the bagpipes. Burness describes the bagpipes: “This set has hand-engraved aluminium wrap-around ferrules and imitation-ivory projecting mounts. The ring caps are hand-engraved aluminium, and the bushes are imitation ivory. Hand-engraved aluminium tuning-pin slides are fitted. The aluminium mounts are all engraved with a Celtic interwoven pattern, and on each ferrule, there are two small panels in which my initials, SAB, are engraved,” said Burness.

Burness can be contacted on 082 571 9438.
