Dangerous ditch raises concerns for residents

Residents say the ditch is a danger to motorists, especially those driving at high speeds or passing by at night when the area is not well lit.

A DANGEROUS ditch on the side of the road has left residents concerned. The ditch is just centimetres away from Feilden Drive, a busy road with several bends which has seen frequent accidents in the past.

What’s more, resident Karin Dreyer says the ditch has been left unattended for months. Dreyer said she reported the matter on January 25.

“This is a problem. We do not have streetlights here. I have requested for all the trees to be cut. You can imagine what happens at nighttime. We have cameras along the road which show how people drive here, sometimes veering onto the wrong side of the road,” she said.

“We’ve got people driving along here at absolutely reckless speeds.”

Another resident, Deon Baum, added that the ditch is a result of a water leak on the road.

“The water used to run over the road, and it kept re-occurring until they figured out there was a leak,” said Baum.

He added that City workers had arrived on the scene to fix the leak and dug the ditch during the repair work.

“I don’t understand how they can use a TLB to excavate and then not use it again to fill in [the ditch] afterwards. I don’t know who is supposed to fill it,” he said.

The eThekwini Municipality was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
