Yet another shooting in Berea leaves one dead

Paramedics arrived to find a vehicle riddled with bullets and declared the victim deceased on the scene.

ONE man was found dead and another man was allegedly rushed to a hospital after the pair sustained gunshot wounds.

Paramedics arrived on King DiniZulu Road (Berea Road) today, March 6, at about 13:30, to find a bullet-ridden vehicle from the shooting incident that is believed to have occurred on Botanic Gardens Road.

Spokesperson for Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics Garrith Jamieson said they arrived on the scene to find the area had been cordoned off by Metro Police and SAPS.

“On closer inspection, it was found that a passenger, a man believed to be in his 40s, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and unfortunately, there was nothing more paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on the scene,” said Jamieson.

“The driver is believed to have been rushed privately to a nearby hospital for the further care required,” added Jamieson.

Jamieson said ALS Paramedics responded to King DinuZulu Road after they received multiple calls of a shooting incident.

“It is alleged that the shooting incident occurred on Botanic Gardens Road, and the driver drove away from the assailants to a place of safety,” said Jamieson.

*SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident, saying the suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle, which was later found abandoned in the Cato Manor area.

“It is alleged that a vehicle with two occupants was at the intersection of Mansfield and Berea roads when they were attacked by unknown gunmen who were travelling in another vehicle. The suspects opened fire on them, and they sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The driver managed to drive the vehicle to a nearby service station to seek assistance. The passenger was declared dead at the scene, and the driver was rushed to hospital after she sustained injuries,” said Gwala.*

This adds to a spate of shootings in the Berea area. Most recently, South African rapper, Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes was shot and killed on Florida Road in Morningside on February 10.
