Former mayor Zandile Gumede returns to Durban High Court

The ongoing court case involves 21 others, including companies and individuals.

THE court case involving former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede is set to resume in the Durban High Court today, Monday, March 6.

The case involves an irregular Durban Solid Waste tender and 21 others, including persons and companies.

The trial began in August last year, where the accused tendered their pleas of not guilty to the charges against them.

This is according to the regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.

“Gumede and others face several charges, including conspiracy to commit corruption, corruption, fraud, money laundering, racketeering, contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act and contravention of the Municipal Systems Act – amounting to over R300m,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

In June 2021, Berea Mail reported that racketeering charges were raised against Gumede, who appeared in the Durban High Court in the ongoing case.

At the time, a trial date was set for mid-year in 2022, for the response and request for further particulars by the parties.
